Long Weekend....
I’m sure many people are looking forward for a long weekend which will start to-day (Friday) especially for those in Sarawak . Many are taking the opportunity to travel around be it locally or go somewhere outside Malaysia.
Vesak Day Year 2010 falls on Friday, 28 May 2010.
Vesak day is celebrated by Buddhist around the world, and in different manners all over the world. Though some countries occasionally use different date for this festival, most would fall on this same day.
Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated in Sarawak on 1 June every year. It is both a religious and social occasion. The word Gawai means a ritual or festival whereas Dayak is a collective name for the native ethnic groups of Sarawak: the Iban, also known as Sea Dayak and the Bidayuh people, also known as Land Dayak. Thus, Gawai Dayak literally means "Dayak Festival". Dayak would visit their friends and relatives on this day.
Happy Gawai Day & Wesak Day to all Malaysian or popular known as 1Malaysia.........

Bergendang or Bermukun and Joget.
Among the Malays, Melanaus and Kedayans of Sarawak, the "Bergendang" ceremony is kept very much alive. The photos above(taken this evening) shows a "Bergendang" performance that is held at the Kuching Waterfront. Guess what? Anybody is welcomed to participate in the dancing, young and old. Visitors to Sarawak can pick up the dance steps very quickly. But the real fun begins when the ladies playing the drum ( named " Mak Gendang" = Lady Drummer) and singing the "Pantun" ( a four-line verse poetic message) gets response from the men. The men reply back in pantun-style the message or question embedded in the "Mak Gendang" pantun. Thus this answering and replying of pantuns continue for hours on end. Today the " Bergendang" is very much part of a wedding celebration activity and held mainly during the night in many villages through out Sarawak.

City Daily Photo-Kenyalang Step's.
Kenyalang Steps’ Sarawak has developed its own version of the ever popular Indonesian line dance, the Poco Poco.
‘Kenyalang Steps’ was developed by the Sarawak Physical Education and Recreation Association.
“The Poco Poco line dance originating from the Minhasa people of Sulawesi has been a very popular group exercise among the people in the state since its introduction about two years ago.
Originates from Indonesia. So Sarawak want to have something which is truly Sarawakian in nature and which can be enjoyed by every race in the state.
The Kenyalang Steps incorporated steps from popular dances of the state’s various ethnic communities performed to a similar fusion of tunes.
“Thus, we will have the Orang Ulu Sape (lute) music to be complemented by the ‘Taboh’ (traditional music) of the Ibans, the Bidayuh, Melanau and the Chinese drum beat for instance.
Picture below show a group of ladies perform kenyalang steps (poco-poco Sarawak version)
.
I check you tube and found videos of Poco-Poco dance.(Indonesia Version)

Migrant Workers.
The movement of people from one place to another place is not new phenomenon. For centuries people have been on the move for one reason or another.demand for both skilled (see picture above)and unskilled workers has grown rapidly in Malaysia.Malaysia import so many foreign workers from neighboring countries and does not mean that we have not enough people to work. The problem doesn't lies on people,it lies with money.
Imagine how can you survive with few hundred ringgit monthly salary or Rm2.00 ringgit per hour with cost of leaving getting higher day by day.But not to migrant workers a few hundred or rm2.00 per hr. will see this is a good salary comparing to their home country and for most cases, accomnodation is provided which they will be able to work and save money for home.
The picture above show how skill is the migrant workers installing roof to high rise tower.
