The Sarawak Rainforest Interhash 2010.

The Sarawak Rainforest Interhash 2010 is being held here in Kuching,Sarawak,Malaysia. The city centre is curretly crawling with hashers from around the World.  There’s a lot to be said for holding Interhash in Malaysia.  It’s the spiritual home of hashing, for one thing.  It’s cheap, for another . . . as are almost all other potential hash venues in Asia, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, etc.

Draft BEER are ready to serve the Guest..Well, I don't drink this ...sorry.

To be honest..I don't know about this hash...and I have a chance talking to one of the hash member and I ask him What is Interhash? It is where Hashers from different groups get together to run and drink beer together.

They were having the red dress charity run,to benefit a few locals foundations. There were plenty of hairy men in red dresses and red hair in town.

Most of the hashers wore fancy dresses. Some men wore women outfits while few others sported American Red Indian headgears and Afro hair wigs. Several were even seen sporting fake horn and tails of the imaginary Red Devil.

To the locals, the culture of these international hashers may be strange and eccentric but the Red Dress Charity Run, in particular, has a unique history.

Caged Hens.

I like early morning outing & wet market is my favorite place, where I can see many business activities by fish monger, vegetable sellers etc, etc. Many people like to buy live chicken during festive season & like you see in my photo here caged hens have no perch or litter to peck and no space to flap their wings or move properly.

Bergendang or Bermukun and Joget.

P4255597

Among the Malays, Melanaus and Kedayans of Sarawak, the "Bergendang" ceremony is kept very much alive. The photos above(taken this evening) shows a "Bergendang" performance that is held at the Kuching Waterfront. Guess what? Anybody is welcomed to participate in the dancing, young and old. Visitors to Sarawak can pick up the dance steps very quickly. But the real fun begins when the ladies playing the drum ( named " Mak Gendang" = Lady Drummer) and singing the "Pantun" ( a four-line verse poetic message) gets response from the men. The men reply back in pantun-style the message or question embedded in the "Mak Gendang" pantun. Thus this answering and replying of pantuns continue for hours on end. Today the " Bergendang" is very much part of a wedding celebration activity and held mainly during the night in many villages through out Sarawak.

A night of colour and splendours to mark MALAYSIA DAY.

The Padang Merdeka here was transformed into a sea of flags and colourful costumes of hundered of dancers in a ceremony to mark the deferred Malaysia Day celebration here.
Malaysia Day was on September 16 but since it fell during the Ramadan month. the celebration was brought forward to Saturday.(10/10/2009)
About 15, 000 people thronged the Padang Merdeka to witness the colourful presentations and cultural performances, which depicted the concept of 1Malaysia.
The performances truly reflected the multi-ethnic racial composition of the country and of the citizens living harmoniously, peacefully, in prosperity and united under one roof.

Hari Raya-Open House.

P9222130

P9272218

Remembering the good old days of Hari Raya the 60's & 70's.I used to follow my friends visiting from house to houses cycling  but not in search of duit raya or better know as Raya angpow. We even go to strangers house and the good thing is that we are welcome .

The open house:

People to-day more likely do open house rather than inviting them to their house like the old days Hari Raya does.I think they felt more convenient with the idea,I mean it's easier right, some house even call pizza hut & KFC for home delivery .Well,as time goes by as people are becoming more advance they much prefer the easier way rather then just following the old days style.

Hari Raya-Lit Up with Lights.

P9252167

A Malay kampung which I visited few night ago..Kampung Bintawa Melayu.

I see many Malay/Muslim houses lit up with lights (colourful light) outside at night. There even old style oil lamps perched all around the house compound. This is Malay tradition but not Islamic requirement.

The best time to visit Kuching is during the month of Ramadhan.Every year in the month of Ramadhan Muslim from within Kuching and outside Kuching will go to Gambier Street and India Street area to shop for cloth and food in preparation for their Hari Raya.

Hari Raya is very much commercialised in Malaysia. In the city like Kuching, shopping malls and commercial centres will hold big promotion and price discounts for festive shoppers as people purchase clothes and supplies.Decorations are hung in public areas and Hari Raya song will be played in shopping complexes. The media, such as TV will host various programs in conjunction with the celebrations and tourist are welcome to their open house.
