My World Tuesday-Sarawak Regatta.

Sarawak Regatta is Kuching’s top boat-racing event, and has 15 different race categories. Traditional Chinese dragon boats, along with other colourful models, are paddled through the waters of the Sarawak River along Kuching Waterfront. The Sarawak Regatta is an annual event held at the Kuching Waterfront at the Sarawak River. This year Sarawak Regatta will be held from 31st July till 2nd August 2009.

Join the crowd for a weekend of watery boat races, sweaty paddlers and enthusiastic crowd which thronged the banks of Sarawak River in the wee hours of the morning to watch paddlers battling their strengths and skills amidst the shouts and cheers.

Watch out for the crowd’s favourite races and the ‘must watch events’, where the ‘Bidar’ boat races take centre stage. Adding to the variety and excitement are the ‘tambang’ boat races, jet-ski races, kayak races and the traditional water sports events. The highlight of these races will be the King of the River title for His Excellency’s the Governor’s Challenge Trophy. The tourist category of a 15 paddlers team and 20 paddlers International category are available to foreign tourists to compete in the race.

A wide array of side events such as tourism, handicrafts, science and technology exhibition trade fairs, cultural and food extravaganza, are an added attraction for this year Regatta. These will certainly bring in more crowd, more excitement, more thrills and spills to the Sarawak Regatta 2009. It will definitely be an event you will not want to miss.

Brief History

SARAWAK REGATTA .... TRACING IT'S ORIGIN

Sarawak Regatta has been a premier event with a distinct historical and cultural significant. It was held as early as before 1872 and was organized as an annual event taking place during the New Year. Sarawak Gazette had recorded in 1872, that the annual Regatta that year was held, on 29th February 1872 at the Sarawak River infront of the Astana. The European community in Sarawak and in the neighboring countries were invited to the Astana - for breakfast - before the race. Keen competition were also recorded for the Rajah Cup.

The boat 'Sri Matu' built and manned by the Melanaus, was reported as the winning boat. The Gazette records provided the indication that Regatta had been an important social event organized annually for social integration and goodwill for the people of Sarawak. Prominent Political figure, the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Ong Kee Hui, recorded that Raja Charles Brooke used to send his yacht "Maimunah1 to outstation to bring in the various "Tuan Residents" to join in the social event.

The tradition of holding the annual Regatta in the Sarawak River continued through the Colonial period and into the post-Malaysia period. During these periods the Regatta was organized by Resident and District Office with funds from the Government while the rest of the fund was raised through public donations.

The day programme include races for traditional longboats, dragon boats and other activities, like the running of totolizers, climbing greasing poles, catching ducks and "pillow fights". Racing boats from outstations made it a grand affair and also a great occasion for families from outside the State Capital to visit Kuching town.

The struggle of a sovereign country began 45 years ago and we continue to succeed until now: CM

KUCHING: On this very day 45 years ago, a country was born that would go on to become a partner in the formation of one of the most progressive nations in this region - Malaysia.

That country is Sarawak and her first chief minister, Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan, was appointed on July 22, 1963, effectively signalling the start of self-rule in Sarawak after years of being governed by the British.

Some 57 days later, Tun Abang Openg was appointed as the first Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak and Tunku Abdul Rahman read the Proclamation of Malaysia in front of thousands of people at Stadium Merdeka.
