After strolling along the Kuching waterfront,I hope on board a sampan or river taxi (Rm0.50cent) which will take you across to Fort Margherita.Named after Margaret ,wife of Charles Brooke(the second of the three "White Rajahs" who once ruled Sarawak. This 19th century fort was strategically built on a hillock  to protect the city from enemy or pirate attacks.To-day it has been converted into a Police museum exhibiting old cannon guns.

Like all town and cities in Sarawak, the focal poin of Kuching, and the reason for its existence,is the river,Hiring a sampan aka perahu tambang to meander slowly up and down the Sarawak River is the best way to get your first impression of Kuching.

This is not a wholesale market.Housewives and other small buyers with fishmongers.
Fishing Jetty in fish market. The catch is being sorted out and put in rfespective baskets to be sold.
Saturday afternoon is not a busy market day in Jalan Gambier because buyers mostly go to Satok weekend market.

Jalan Gambier, where the fruit, vegetable and fish markets and the spice merchants are located.

Gambier Street-If you follow the passageway you'll pass a small Mosque hidden away in the middle of the city. The Mosque's structure has undergone many changes since it was originally built by Kuching's Indian Muslim community in the mid 19th century.Masjid Bandar Kuching aka Masjid India.
Chinese shopshouses architecture in Market Street.

The old Market street ,it has some superb example of Chinese shophouse architecture.
Many of which have been occupied by the same family for generations. These families still pursue traditional occupations such as tin-smithing,carpentry and petty trading.
