KUCHING: On this very day 45 years ago, a country was born that would go on to become a partner in the formation of one of the most progressive nations in this region - Malaysia.

That country is Sarawak and her first chief minister, Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan, was appointed on July 22, 1963, effectively signalling the start of self-rule in Sarawak after years of being governed by the British.
Some 57 days later, Tun Abang Openg was appointed as the first Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak and Tunku Abdul Rahman read the Proclamation of Malaysia in front of thousands of people at Stadium Merdeka.

Sarawak has it's own version of history, all that I only learnt in school. It must be hard for us to taste independence.
